My Turn: Confidence, Vulnerability, and the Power of Being Photographed

Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a photography event in Knoxville, that I had been looking forward to for quite some time. This trip was both a professional investment and a personal experience that gave me a new perspective on the work I do.

Over the past year, I’ve been learning alongside an amazing group of photographers in an online program. This conference was a chance to meet them in person and, most meaningfully, to be photographed by my mentor, Saray Roman Taylor.

Why I Went

I went to grow my skills, connect with other photographers, and most importantly, to experience what it feels like to be the client. As photographers, we spend so much time behind the camera that we sometimes forget how vulnerable it feels to be on the other side.

And I’ll be honest. Even knowing the process inside and out, it was nerve-racking. I worried I’d be the one to “break the camera,” but I also knew I needed to trust the process and allow myself to be guided.

What the Experience Taught Me

Stepping in front of the camera reminded me just how much trust clients place in their photographer. Posing can feel strange at first, and you have to believe the person holding the camera truly has your best interest in mind.

What surprised me most was how empowering it felt to be guided. Once I let go of trying to control the outcome, I started to see myself in a new way. I left feeling more confident and grounded, and that’s exactly the kind of experience I want to offer to my own clients.

I also gained a deeper appreciation for the trust my clients give me. It’s not automatic. I have to earn it by coaching them through each step, showing the back of the camera during the session, and checking in to make sure they feel seen and supported.

Supporting Women in Front of the Camera

For many women, the idea of booking a branding session feels overwhelming. That’s why I take the time to walk clients through the process from the very beginning. During the wardrobe consultation, I remind them that this isn’t about perfection. It’s about presence.

One of the gifts of digital photography is that we can check in as we go. We can make sure we’re on the right track and adjust if needed. If we ever need to reshoot something, we go right back into the studio. I want every woman to walk out knowing which images she loved enough to keep.

What Shifted for Me Personally

This session also felt personal in a way I didn’t expect. I’ve been navigating some health issues that I don’t usually talk about. I knew I needed to trust Saray with that part of my story so she could guide me through the session with care.

She did exactly that. Her patience and support allowed me to show up fully, and the result was more than a set of images. It was a reminder that even with challenges, I could still feel strong, beautiful, and seen.

When I viewed the final portraits, I saw myself. Not a perfect version, just the best version of me on that day. And that is what I want for every client who steps into my studio

Looking Ahead

Since recently turning sixty, I’ve been feeling a fresh sense of clarity and inspiration. This experience reminded me that aging is not something to hide or resist. It is a beautiful, ongoing journey that deserves to be seen, celebrated, and honored. Every line, every chapter, every shift in confidence or perspective is part of the story — and that story is worth documenting with intention and care.

I would love to meet you on this journey.
